Whether you’re a child or an adult, getting metal braces for the first time is an exciting milestone. From your first consultation to getting retainers, here’s how your treatment journey will play out:
Consult With Our Expert Team
Your first consultation with Dr. Skabelund, Dr. Jacobs, and our team is free. To determine your eligibility for metal braces, we’ll assess your bite problem’s severity, medical and family history, and treatment goals.
As a practice that values compassion, we’ll make sure that our treatment plan suits your needs and lifestyle. Whatever questions you have about braces treatment, we’ll answer them professionally and truthfully.
Dental Cleaning & Braces Placement
Dr. Skabelund or Dr. Jacobs will first clean your pearly whites so they’re bacteria-free. After general cleaning, we’ll glue the brackets, attach the wire, and hook the colored elastics.
You’ll feel a gentle pressure later on. This is normal and should disappear after a couple of days.
Adjustment Time
Every four to six weeks, you’ll come to our Fairfield or Oxford office for your adjustment. We’ll check your progress and adjust the wire’s tension or replace it completely. The best part? You’ll get another set of colored elastics.
Letting Go
Next, we’ll get down to business. Using special tools, Dr. Skabelund or Dr. Jacobs will gently remove your brackets and wires, which won’t hurt.
Once we polish your teeth, you’ll get to admire your beautiful new smile.

When you finish your braces treatment, your teeth have a natural tendency to shift back toward their old places.
